The Basic Poker Types
While there are many variations of poker there are three basic categories that all poker games fall into. It is these three categories that all poker games fall into and are based in. Once a player recognizes these three types of poker types an experienced player can pick up on any other variations thrown at him.
It is these three basic types of poker that will be discussed here. They are the community card games, the draw poker games, and finally the stud poker game.
All of the known games such as Texas Hold’em poker or any other poker game will fall into one of these three types. Let’s take a closer look and define each category so that we can all understand the basic types.
Community Card Poker Games:
This type of poker is where players will have some personal hold cards which are theirs alone but there will also be some shared cards dealt that all players will be able to use in developing their best poker hand. The most famous, and fastest growing online poker sensation, is the great game of Texas Hold’em. This is a game where each player has two hold cards and there are 5 community cards which each player may use all or any combination of their 2 hold cards and the 5 community cards to form the best 5 card poker hand.
Draw Poker Games:
In draw poker games a player is dealt a certain number of cards and is then able to trade in some of his cards for some new cards. All of these cards are theirs alone and not shared with the other players. The most famous of the draw poker games is 5 card draw. In this game a player is dealt 5 cards and then during the draw, usually after a round of betting, a player can exchange up to 3 cards (4 if they declare and Ace) in their hand for new cards trying to improve their hand. 5 card draw is one of the oldest variations of poker.
Stud Poker Games:
In stud poker games some of the player’s cards will be exposed to rival players although unlike the community card games, the cards revealed are not playable to other players. The shown cards are used for betting purposes and typically there is a betting round after each newly exposed round of cards. While there are many variations to stud games, 7 card stud is most common. In 7 card stud each play is dealt two down cards and a round of betting takes place. Then the next four cards are turned up in rounds with a betting turn each card revealed, then finally the last card is dealt face down to the player followed by a final round of betting. A player then builds his best (or worst hand if the game is low-ball) 5 card poker hand out of the 7 cards using any combination of the 3 down cards and 4 exposed cards.
