| One of the
most important factors when it comes to poker is betting and raising.
If you want to become an effective poker player, it’s better
to start now than later and educate yourself on the rules of betting
and raising.
In no limit and pot limit poker games, you are allowed unlimited
raising (maniac players love this rule, I bet!).
Check-raise in allowed in all poker games except for certain lowball
game types.
When playing, rapping your hand on the poker table signifies that
you’re passing.
Verbal declaration in poker is equal to action so stating that
you want to bet a certain amount even without the act of putting
the chips itself on the table is already understood as an affirmative.
This goes the same with raising, folding, checking or calling.
So think hard before speaking up.
Deliberately acting out of turn is never allowed in any poker
game. A poker player who checks out of turn shall be prohibited
from betting or raising on his next turn. Any action or verbal
declaration that signifies an act out of turn may be ruled binding
if none of the other poker players bet, call or raise after the
said violation. Once again, with more emphasis this time – think
very, very hard before speaking up. It’s truly for your own
good when it comes to poker games.
String raises are very much a no-no in poker games. For raise
protection, you should either verbally state the amount you’re
betting or putting the appropriate number of chips to match the
amount. If you place a full bet, along with a half bet into the
pot, this is just as if you’re saying that you’re going
for a raise. Keep in mind however that this rule doesn’t
pertain to single chips of greater values.
In limit poker, if you push your chips forward or make an action
similar to that, as if intending to bet or raise, and this forces
your opponent to act, you may be required to complete the action.
Lesson learned here is simple – don’t bluff with your
hands. Rather, bluff with the face!
In poker games, if you place a single chip in a pot, of whose
amount is larger than the bet, but neglect to call a raise, it
is assumed that you’re simply calling.
And so to reiterate the most important rule when it comes to betting
and raising– think first before you act and speak.
