Caro's
Book of Poker Tells by Mike Caro
This is a very interesting book as it goes more into the psychology
of poker rather than actual strategy. It is with these skill combined
with a knowledge and skill of poker itself that is a good combination
to winning poker.
Without knowing how to read people you can only win one type of
poker hand. That is where you have the boss hand at the table.
Even good bluffing skills or good betting skills will still not
get you to the level of where you can be if you know how to win
the other type of hands.
That other type is the hand where your opponent doesn’t have
the hand to which he is betting. These can invariably be the larger
pots as the pride in people will not allow them to back down on
bluffs and when you learn to read this you will rake in bigger
and bigger pots.
Caro's Book of Poker Tells goes into the two types of tells an
opponent player uses. The first being a type of tell when a player
doesn’t know they are giving away the strength (or weakness)
of their hand with subconscious movement, expressions, body language,
and sounds. These tells are very valuable when reading novice players
or players that are out of their depth.
The second type of tell is the actor. This type of tell is when
a player is trying to bluff his way through a hand and control
the game. This is truly the gold of the book. Caro teaches you
to recognize what the actor is trying to get you to do or trying
to influence the way you bet and tells you to do the exact opposite.
By being unpredictable but knowing what o predict from your opponent
you can truly dominate a table including players that might have
actual better poker skills than you.
The last thing this book does is teach you to read yourself. Often
times we don’t know that we ourselves are giving away our
own hands and while winning pots, scaring away potential betters
by our own tells. When you learn the tells you can prevent people
from reading you which in turns means more success from the table.
Not so much a traditional poker book filled with odds and statistics
on hands and the percentage of pots per say, but an invaluable
tool to take your winning up a notch and your poker game up another
notch.
All in all a very valuable book for the live poker player. Add
this to your library!
