Reviewing the Hands

In poker, 52 cards consisting of 4 suits are used. Individual cards are ranked accordingly with ace as the highest and 2 the lowest. In between the two, the ranking proceeds as follows : king, queen, jack, ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three. Cards between the suits are equally ranked. For example, the jack of hearts is not ranked higher than the jack of spades.

There are five cards in a poker hand. The hand categories are written below. Hands belonging to the higher category are more superior to hands in a lower category. When the hands belong to the same category, the individual cards play a role in deciding which hand is better.

1. Royal Flush
This is the superior hand. It consists of the five highest cards (AKQJ10) all in the same suit. No royal flush is higher than another royal flush.

2. Straight Flush
Cards in the same order and the same suit. For example, 56789 of flowers. In determining the higher of two straight flushes, the one with the higher top card is superior.

3. Four of a kind
Also termed as “quads,’ it consists of four cards of the same rank and a fifth card which can be anything (KKKK2).

4. Full House
A set of five cards consisting of equally ranked three cards and a pair of cards belonging to another rank. Example, 8-8-8-7-7

5. Flush
A flush is a set of five cards belonging to the same suit.

6. Straight
Five cards in consecutive order and mixed suits.

7. Three of a Kind
It consists of same ranked three cards and two other cards.
8. Two Pairs
Consists of two pairs of cards with different ranks and a different card to make up five cards.

9. Pair
Two cards of ranked equally three odd cards

10. High Card
Five cards that do not fall to the card categories mentioned above. If the highest cards are the same, comparison moves to the second card; likewise, if they are equal, comparison moves to the third and so on.

Like the game itself, these hands have also gone major variations. For instance, when using a wild card, there is a five of a kind, that is a five cards of the same rank. In this case, five of a kind is higher than royal flush.

Knowing what hand can beat another hand makes the game of poker even more exciting. Luck of the draw always plays a role in getting the best hand possible.
