Harrington
on Hold'em: Expert Strategy for No Limit Tournaments by Dan Harrington,
Bill Robertie
If you have any poker knowledge at all you will know the name of
Dan Harrington. For those that don’t know, Dan Harrington is
the 1995 world champion, and the only player in history to make the
final table in both 2003 and 2004, overcoming the two biggest fields
in World Series history (839 and 2,576 players, respectively).
His poker knowledge is beyond question and in this book he maps out
a perfect strategy to what can be a very complex game. The other
author is a recognized master of backgammon and has written several
very influential books on that game. The game of backgammon and poker
have the same theories when dealing with aggressive and conservative
players and it is this arena that Robertie’s knowledge and
experience pays off in spades.
Many books fail to capture this complexity as they don’t understand
that Texas Hold’em requires a good intuition and table feel.
Harrington and Robertie discuss and lay out a full review of poker
playing styles.
While Harrington has a reputation for being a conservative player,
that does not preclude him from mapping out all the styles of play
from aggressive approaches to his own. Obviously to be successful
on the poker tables you need to not only understand your own style
and maximize its potential as well as recognize its weaknesses, you
will need to do the opposite and take advantage of other styles of
play as well as know the strengths to avoid pitfalls.
This is a medium level book that addresses many problems and skills
that the beginner will not recognize at first. Reading this as a
starter book will not destroy your game, but a basic knowledge and
skill set is advantageous to take full advantage of this book.
This is the type of book that does not take a long time to digest.
Many other books after finishing will actually effect your poker
play in a negative way as you try to incorporate the newly learned
skills into your own style. This book however will re-enforce your
own good poker playing habits and allow you to recognize these effects
on other players and also teach you when you exhibit bad habits how
they also effect the aggressive player and conservative player.
By developing this style you will soon master reading and controlling
the poker tables. And if that isn’t a good enough reason to
buy a book, there isn’t any!
