Poker History and Basics

Poker is a very popular game played throughout the world but remains a favorite in its country of origin, the United States.

Poker is a five-card vying game with standard vying cards. It is so called because, rather than playing their cards out, the players raise a bet and those holding the best possible hand raises the stakes until the best wins the pot or all except one player has given up and dropped out of play, when the last person to raise wins the pot without any competition. In a betting round, the players may decide to choose any of the following:

1. check, when called the player does not lose his chance of winning the pot
2. bet or raise, an amount greater than previous bets that all successive players needs to match or exceed otherwise lose their chance in winning the pot
3. call, a bet equal to a preceding bet that keeps a player's interest in the pot
4. fold, called when a player gives up interest in the pot compared to another player's bet. The player gives up his cards and previous bets

Poker dates back to the first or second decade of the 19th century in New Orleans during the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. In about 1830 to 1845, all 52 cards were used in the game enabling more than four players to compete in the game.

Poker usually proceeds in a circle where all of the participants either agrees to the bet or folds. In some poker variants, different sets of betting rounds include replacement of cards. The player with the best hand is declared the winner of the pot.

In a poker tournament, poker players compete for a part of a prize pool. As the game progresses, the stakes are raised to a higher notch. The tournament usually proceeds until a player is declared winner.

In some tournaments, the winner may take all the money, or the top finishers may have a share of the prize pool depending on the agreement. Some variations of the tournament allows an eliminated player to rejoin the tournament immediately by simply adding money to the pool. The player can either add money to the player with the least money or even to all the active players. Still, there are variations which allow a betting structure which may include limit only, pot limit, no limit or a combination of the three.
