Online poker room basics
The Basic online poker room strategic knowledge is fundamental for any online poker player. If you do not have a strategy, then you will not have any basis to make decisions about whether to fold, bet raise or re-raise, then you might as well just go play bingo. You will of course still win the occasional game, but without the strategy, knowledge and discipline you can not exercise any control over your future as an online poker player.
If you took 100 online poker players and asked them all the same question: “What is the point of online poker? Then most of them by far would answer that it is to win as many pots as possible. This however, could hardly be further from the truth. The goal of online poker is to win money, not pots. If the goal was to win as many pots as possible, you could do that easily, just play each and every hand to the end calling and raising all the way, then you would win a lot of pots, but you would loose money, plenty of money and fast.
We have established that the goal of online poker is to win money, and that means tempering your enthusiasm and be very selective of the hands you play. You do not and should not play every hand dealt to you. The best online poker players only play very few of the hands they are dealt, but when they play a hand they usually bet assertively and they will be able to maximize the pot they win by using a betting strategy.
This is in short the essence of online poker, anybody can win short term, but in the continuing game, the experienced player will win more, even when the cards are even. The better players win more with their good hands and loose less on their bad hands than their opposition.
Due to the luck involved poker is a game where even the worst players can and do sometimes have winning streaks, this would not happen in most other sports, I mean most of us would not really stand a chance against Mike Tyson in the boxing ring right? Yet most of us online poker players think we are good at what we do.
If you took a poll at any online poker table, I would raise and reraise on the fact that most players at the table would rate themselves as notably above average online poker players. That is simply not the case though, over time the good players will beat bad players, even though the bad players will have their glorious nights as well, just making them come back next time to loose twice as much.
Online poker takes a delicate balance of skill, persistence and luck, this balance keeps the game even and rewards the good players, who are realistic about their game and abilities to play online poker.
Your first efforts at online poker should be focused on learning the basic online poker concepts; once you understand them and have a general understanding of the game you can apply this know-how to your game.
