Conduct in Online Poker Rooms
To play poker online you usually have to download a particular poker room's software / poker client. That software runs locally on your computer and interacts with the poker room's server side software. Most poker room software runs on the Microsoft Windows environment, only very few online poker rooms support Apple Macintosh as of now.
Once you have downloaded and installed the poker room client on your computer, you will have to sign up and register your username etc. Once the initial setup is done, you can usually browse the games currently in play and even go to these tables and view the poker games in progress. This also gives you a good overview of available seats, betting limits and play status.
It is always a good idea to observe a poker table before actually joining the game. You can learn a lot about the other players strategies and skill level just by observing the table for a little while.
To join a game in progress, just click on an empty seat, then you will have to select how many chips you are going to bring to the table, this sets a limit to how much you can win / loose in an all in.
Once you join the particular game you will see your own cards plus the board cards displayed to you. No other player can see your pocket cards and you can of course not see the other players pocket cards.
Every time it is your turn, you select your actions by clicking the buttons usually placed in the bottom right corner of the poker table. Your options are: Check, Fold, Call, Raise, of course each different poker room has its own software and you will have to get used to each individual program you choose to use.
You should always play extensively at the play-money table before engaging in a real money play in any poker room. even though the poker strategy is a lot different between play-money games and real money games it will still give you training in that particular software and your game play will be a lot smoother.
The game speed in online poker rooms is a lot faster than playing at a real life poker game; it is not unusual to see around 40 hands played per hour while playing online poker. Online poker rooms offer many time saving features, such as pre-checking of your desired actions, if you are dealt 7 3 and your seat is in the end of the round you have plenty of time to check the fold button so your hand will be folded instantly when it is your turn. The dealer is of course another time saving feature, nobody has to shuffle and physically deal the poker cards.
If you decide to play for real money in an online poker room, then you will have to deposit money with that poker room using your credit card, netteller, bank transfer or other means of payment. This is always done on SSL secured web pages, so your credit card details are always 100% safe as it is encrypted on its way from your computer to the processing merchant's bank.
