Before learning to play the game of poker, it is essential to
have knowledge of some terms being used in poker.
Bluff
A fundamental strategy in the game of poker is bluffing. It happens
when a player assumes or pretends to have a better card than the
actual. The bluffing player bets higher than what his or her card
can warrant. The main objective of a bluff is to provide a scare
to the other poker players out of the hand by making them assume
that he is holding superior cards.
Aggressive play
A player is considered “aggressive“ when he bets high
and forces the other players to keep away from their zone of comfort.
The maximum bet limit is his or her target and stays “in” until
the final card has been laid down. Depending on the skill level
of the player, an aggressive play is a fast way to get rid of a
lot of cash.
Conservative play
In contrast, a poker player is "conservative" when he
or she targets the minimum bet limit and folds if the cards are
not to his or her advantage. A conservative play keeps more money
in the pocket, but more often does not win big pots. When someone
is a conservative player, people often find an escape when you
bet more than the minimum. The bluffer’s trickery makes a
conservative player susceptible.
Action
Action may refer to “getting busy” for those who are
in dating. In poker, an action refers to the amount of betting
happening at a given table. When a player says “I’m
gone, there’s not enough table action here.” This only
meant that cash flow is not enough and money is not being risked.
Tell
A mannerism that is advertently repeated just to let the other
players realize how good your hand is is called a "tell".
Although no player wants to let other people know it, everyone
has a tell. Lying is a tell used to give little clues. Wiping the
brow is a tell when he has a good hand as a means of keeping the
excitement. Other tells include gritting of the teeth when a low
hand is given, a nervous reaction of someone who is about to bluff.
Whatever it is, it is always up to you to find out the other players
tell and try to keep your tell to yourself. Play as normal as possible
so that the possibility of discovering your tell may be eliminated.
