Cheating in poker can come in two kinds, soft cheating and hard
cheating. Soft cheating happens when the player notes the bottom
card that the dealer exposed without calling for a misdeal. Hard
cheating happens when the player tries to cheat through some sort
of illegal agreement or bending of the mechanics.
Another way to cheat is the sleight of hands. If you have very
quick hands, using them aside from magic tricks may prove to be
beneficial in poker (If you’re desperate in winning the game).
Cheating using the sleight of hands includes stacking the deck,
bottom dealing, and switching cards. Bottom dealing happens when
the dealer places the highest cards on the bottom of the deck when
shuffling and gives the cards to his teammates.
Another way to cheat is through second dealing. The dealer will
take a peek at the first or second card on the deck during or after
the cut. With him knowing the cards, he can then choose to deal
the cards to his teammates or not give the cards to his opponents.
Second dealing is harder to do than bottom dealing. Most people
who do this are called card sharps or card sharks.
Another way of cheating is the use of cheating gaffs. Some methods
include using marked cards, hold-out devices and glims. One of
these cheat is the hold-out devices have mostly been invented in
the 19th century. This device is pretty complicated to operate
and is often used by experts. This device as its name implies helps
the cheater hold and hide a certain card. He will then use the
card when he sees fit that it can give him the winning card. He
can also switch the cards he has with the card he is holding out.
Some poker cheaters also operate in groups. The group is composed
of the shills or the dummy players, the card mechanic or the person
in charge of manipulating the cards, and the bodyguards. There
are also some lookouts that may be involved.
The best way to prevent being cheated at poker is to play with
your friends and avoid betting large amounts of money. Don’t
try to make a career out of poker unless you are really a professional,
unless you would want the card sharks to only make money out of
you.
