A History of Poker

Poker is not a child’s game where you would poke someone. It is not “Poke-her” for some people whoa re still not aware of this game. It is poker; it is a card game that is catching the world by storm. Unlike the game “Poke-her” (if there is one), poker is more exciting because this card game includes the use of intelligence as well.

Poker is becoming one of the most popular card games today. Its rising popularity is due to the online world. Because poker can now be played online, more people can have access playing it. Another reason is that the internet is a global phenomenon, so more and more countries are also able to learn about poker just by searching it at Yahoo or Google. Another reason why poker is becoming more famous is because of the hole card camera. This invention finally makes the game a spectator sport.

Although poker is really becoming famous now, it wasn’t as globally phenomenal back then. In fact when I was in high school, I always heard of the game poker and was intrigued by the game. Since I was too young back then to go to the casinos and there were only few people who still have access to the internet, I just let the matter slip away. It was only recently, because of the poker shows on TV and the Yahoo Poker that I finally learned poker.

Let us take a look way back at how poker really started. Before the time of online poker and the game was just purely between the card holder and his opponents. By learning more about the history of poker, we may appreciate it more.

Some people believe that it was the Persian sailors that taught the French settlers in New Orleans. This was because the game closely resembles the Persian game As Nas and sounds like a French word that descended from the word Poque. Poque descended from the word Pochen from Germany, meaning to knock off. Another game that has seemed to have influenced poker up to this point is the English game brag which incorporated bluffing into the game.

Some historians say that during 1829 in New Orleans, it was played with only 20 cards. There will then be 4 players that will then bet on who among them has the best cards. Eventually the full 52 deck of cards were used and the flush was introduced. Throughout time other things have been introduced as well such as draw and stud poker and the straight during the American Civil War.

Poker became more famous in modern America de to the World Poker Tournament which started in the 1970’s. It was also during the 1970’s that poker books started to emerge. In other parts of the world, like Asia, the spread of Poker can be attributed to American military.

That’s how poker emerges to the popular game we all love and play now. Poker has become one way for us to socialize and relive stress. The important thing for some people is to never take this thing to seriously, after all this is still a game.
