Poker Lingo
Texas Hold'em is one of the most standard poker games
played and has some very specific terminology. This
is a quick dictionary that goes through the basic Texas Hold'em lingo
(blind, flop,
river,
etc.) so you can fully enjoy this brand of poker.
If you
are
not familiar with the of
Texas Hold'em poker please review them.
Blind:
(Small Blind/Big Blind) - The Blinds are forced bets, the person
left of the dealer have to bet the Small Blind and the person two seats
left of the dealer has to bet the Big Blind thus ensuring a pot is available
for a hand of poker. Probably where the phrase "No free hands" came from.
Bluffing / Semi Bluff
Preflop:
This is when there are no Board Cards and before the Flop is dealt on the table.
Board Cards:
These are the open cards in the middle of the table. These five Board
Cards are shared among all the players and are used in conjunction
with your hold cards to form your poker hand.
Flop:
These are the first three Board Cards dealt on the table in Texas Hold'em
Poker. Once these are dealt betting starts.
Turn:
The Turn is the fourth Board Card to be dealt after the betting round is completed
after the Flop. Another round of betting will take place after the Turn.
River:
This critical card is the fifth Board Card to be dealt. The River is dealt after
betting is completed from the turn card. Once the River has been dealt a final
round of betting commences.
Draw:
This term refers to when you are staying in the game hoping to improve
your hand. If you, for example, got an Ace and a King dealt and
the initial Board Cards are a Five, Jack, and a Queen,
then you might want to stay in for the River Card to be turned
turn to see if you can Draw a Ten to complete your straight.
Limit Poker:
In this brand of poker
the bets are restricted to a specific amount. You may not bet a smaller
or larger amount.
The exact amount will be in the declared before cards are dealt.
For example if you are in a $1-2 Limit game your bets would be:
Preflop: $1 (AKA the Small Bet)
The Flop: $1
The Turn: $2 (AKA the Big Bet)
The River: $2
Longhand:
This is a poker game with seven or more players.
Shorthand:
This is a poker game with six or less players.
Outs:
This is the number of cards that can make your hand better. If you
have Jack and a King on your hand and the flop has a Ten and Queen,
then an Ace or a Nine would be
needed to improve your hand. There are 4 Nines and 4 Aces in the
game so that would mean you have a total of 8 outs.
Pocket Pair:
The two cards you are dealt at the begging of the game after
the Blinds. These cards are not visible to other players.
Position:
This is where you sit in the game. The dealer has the best position
as he has to act last in the round and will therefore know more
about what the other players are up to when it is his time to act.
The Small and Big blinds are the worst positions, as they have already
made their bet and they have to act first in the round
