Understanding Pot Odds In Poker

If you want to have an upper hand when you’re playing poker, one of the advantages you can easily gain is understanding pot odds.

When talking about pot odds, you’re talking about the relationship between how big the pot is for the game to how big the bet is. If you know how to gauge pot odds, you’ll have a better chance of winning. Let’s say, for example, that on a particular poker game, the pot size is twenty dollars and the bet size is five dollars. The ratio or pot odds then is four to one (4 : 1). Get it so far? Good. But if not, just open a new window and search for a simpler, step by step formula on how to calculate ratio.

The Pot Size

Calculating the pot size, however, becomes slightly different for each variation of poker. Ordinarily, you would do as we did in the aforementioned example and focus on the fact the pot size is worth twenty dollars and a bet is worth four dollars or a fourth of the pot size.

If you’ve joined a Limit Poker game, however, it’s more important for a poker player to know how many bets are in a pot rather than its equivalent amount in dollars.

So, going back to our previous example, concentrate on the fact that there are four bets already in the pot rather than focusing on the fact that there are twenty dollars already inside it. If you’re playing a game like Texas Hold’Em poker, on the other hand, method of calculating pot size is different once more.

You must count a big bet as two small bets. The method of calculating may become more difficult for other poker variations but needless to say, you still have to do it. Be a good boy and drink your milk, in other words.

Using What You’ve Learned

Now that you’ve mastered the necessary skills to calculate pot odds, it’s time to put your knowledge into good use. We shall stick with the example we’ve used and imagine that the pot odds are four to one. Now, calculate this in proportion to the poker hand you’re holding.

Use the information you’ve gathered also to gauge the poker hands your opponents are holding. By doing these, you will be able to arrive at a rough estimate on the chances you have to win the round.

Last But Not The Least

It’s been calculated that every out provides you approximately four percent of improving. Do not forget however that understanding pot odds is not the only skill you need to win poker. It’s one of the skills but it’s not the sum total of all skills.
