Texas Hold’em

online poker roomWhile many online casinos have multiple brands of poker available, one thing for sure is you will find Texas Hold’em tables always present. This is a great game with several betting rounds which can build great pots.

In Texas Hold’em, each player will receive two down cards as their personal hand. These cards known as hole cards are not shared. After each player receives their hole cards there will be a round of betting.

Next three board cards are turned simultaneously which all players will share trying to build their best poker hand. These three cards are called the flop. After the flop another round of betting will take place.

The next two board cards are turned one at a time, the first being called the Turn and the last being called the River. A round of betting takes place after each the Turn and the River.

As mentioned earlier, the board cards are community cards where players use any five-card combination from among the board and their hole cards. If desired players may even use all of the board cards and no hole cards to form their hand. This is called "playing the board."

For betting a dealer button is used. The usual style of Texas Hold’em is to use two blinds, but there are versions with only one blind, multiple blinds, just an ante, or even a combination of blinds plus an ante. It is best to watch a few rounds at a table before jumping in.

Once the betting pre-flop, then the flop, then after the turn, and the final betting round of betting after the river, it is time for the showdown. The showdown is where each player using their best five card combination of their hole cards and the board cards show their hands. The last player to raise shows first if he has been called. If the last raiser has no other players call the pot is his and he does not have to show his cards.

When there are two or more players involved after the last bet is made, called, and the pot is square, then all hands are shown and the highest five-card hand wins the pot. If there is a tie the pot is evenly divided amongst the winning hands.

Omaha

Omaha is very similar to Texas Hold’em as there is a three-card flop on the board then aa fourth board card, and a final fifth board card.

Where it differs is that each player is dealt four hole cards rather than two at the beginning. Players make their best hand using two of their hole cards and three board cards. The betting rounds are the same as Texas Hold'em. Then at the showdown, usually the entire four-card hole hand should be shown to receive the pot.

The best possible five-card poker hand, using exactly two hole cards and three board cards, wins the pot.

Five Card Draw

There are two betting rounds during this version of poker. One bet before the draw and then one after the draw. The game is usually played with a button and an ante. Each player in turn can check, open for the minimum, or open with a raise.

After the ante each player is dealt five cards. These are personal cards and not shown to any other player. Then once players all receive their cards a round of betting commences. After this first betting round before the next betting round players will have the chance to draw new cards to replace the ones they wish to discard. Up to three cards may be discarded for new ones unless a player has an ace in which case he declares the ace and may receive four new cards.

Betting after the draw starts with the opener, or next player proceeding clockwise around the table if the opener has folded his hand. Some five-card draw games allow players to open betting with any cards while others versions require the first bettor to have at least a pair of jacks or better.
