The Poker Room Semi-Bluff
The semi-bluff is not like a regular bluff where you simply have nothing and know it. The semi-bluff is when you have a poor hand although you bet like it is a stronger one. The hope is that while having a poor hand you can bluff out those with possibly stronger hands all the while hoping a better hand is made from the draw.
This type of bluff can be a very powerful tool as it will confuse other players into believing you more when an actual bluff is made. A semi-bluff is a very aggressive move and can win a table if used correctly although the possibility of losing your shirt is also there if semi-bluffing is overused.
Semi-bluffing in poker is used very often in showdown games with 2 or 3 players as the blinds can eat you alive at that point and the semi-bluff is more of a prayer than anything else.
Semi-bluffing in Texas Hold’em is best utilized in bluffing situations. The reason for this is that most players won’t realize exactly when (or if) you made your draw improving your hand. This technique is more effective used in late positions on the flop or turn. Obviously semi-bluffing is not used on the river as if you don’t have a winning hand by that point you are flat out bluffing.
Semi-bluffing’s strongest against weaker players and after a mediocre flop that potentially can make your hand stronger while not necessarily helping your opponents.
An example of a semi-bluff is flopping 4 cards to a flush or straight. The experienced player in a late position will semi-bluff as there are draws to win the hand although you want to do this if you are in a late position and see others at the table waning from non-winning hands. Obviously taking into account how others are check raising and possibly semi-bluffing themselves.
Here are many outs at that point and even if you didn’t hit on the turn it would still be advisable to continue to semi-bluff playing on the river to complete your hand. Again this all depends on the reactions and raises from the other players.
Semi-bluffing can work wonders to turn around a session at the table. Learning when and how are the best ways to use semi-bluffing will come from experience. Practice on the smaller stakes tables or free tables and consciously play those weak hands you’d normally fold on if a conservative player. By watching other players and playing almost against the odds, you will quickly learn how powerful a tool semi-bluffing can be.
