We’ve
heard of the marriage trap. Or the one used in hunting. But what’s
this about the poker trap? If you’re an amateur or an indifferent
audience when it comes to poker, you’re probably scratching
your head and wondering what the heck it’s referring to.
But upon explanation, it’s a guarantee that you’ll
understand right away what the Poker Trap is about.
Imagine playing a card game. One where there’s something at stake. You’ve
got a favorite strategy and though you’re already employing it in your
play, for some reason or another, the magic just isn’t there. But still
you persist and stubbornly cling to your favorite style of play – you’ve
convinced yourself that it’s just bad luck that’s making you lose
but sooner or later, things will turn out for the better.
Well, folks, that’s what the Poker Trap is all about.
Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is good. Knowing what skills
you’re
particularly good at and what strategies you’re best at utilizing is of
course an invaluable asset when it comes to playing poker. But this can easily
become a liability if it becomes a trap: it traps you into thinking that you’re
only good at one particular style of poker; it traps you into believing that
only one poker strategy can work wonders for your game.
If you’ve found yourself in this trap: get rid of it, quick. Or risk
the chance of becoming a mediocre, limited poker player for the rest of your
life.
Avoiding the poker trap is not easy. It’s hard to eradicate years’ worth
of self-brainwashing. But again, it’s not impossible.
The first step to take is accepting that you’re indeed caught by the poker
trap. Remind yourself of all those times that you could have won a poker game
if only you hadn’t been too stubborn and changed styles. Remind yourself
of that and make a promise never to let it happen again.
Practice other strategies. Now that you understand how your all-time-favorite
strategy isn’t as invincible as you once believed, research and practice
other poker strategies to improve your game. You’ve got quite a bit of
catching up to compared to other players who were smart enough to avoid the poker
trap but don’t give up as there’s always one who’s less fortunate
than you.
Lastly, test your skills in a tournament. Tournament poker players are
comparatively better than live poker players mainly because they have no
recourse when
they fold, unlike live poker players who always have the option to dig
deeper in
their pockets if they become bankrupt. Yes, naturally, you may have a losing
streak
when you begin practicing your newfound skills but practice makes perfect
as they say so don’t think of it as time wasted.
Now, go get ‘em tiger!
