The passion
for the game of poker is very evident worldwide. Poker has been around
for years – in our homes, the casinos and even the Internet.
Its popularity has brought about the rise of different poker variations.
Admission to any game is determined by the amount of skills the
player exhibits. Gaining an edge, for example, is needed in some
games like 7-card stud high/low with declare (no qualifier), thus
it requires highly-skilled players. In some games folding is discouraged
so that skill to decide the outcome is minimized. A large investment
is required prior to knowledge of a player’s hand thereby
leveling the playing field.
Draw Poker Variations
In draw poker, players receive an initial five cards. As the game
progresses, the cards are discarded and replaced by a new one
taken from the deck of cards. These variations allow from 3 to
10 players depending on the game. Among the most famous games
in this variation are 5-Card Draw, Anaconda and Don Juan.
Stud Poker Variations
In most Stud variations, an additional card is given to the players
at the completion of a betting round until a total of seven cards
have been dealt. Few variations even include revealing of cards
at a designated time within a betting round. More famous stud pokers
are Five-Card Stud, Jack the Shifter and Auction.
Shared-Card Poker Variations
In shared-card, common cards to all the players are laid down at
the center of the table after a small amount of cards are individually
dealt. Texas Hold ‘Em and Cincinatti are under these variation.
Miscellaneous Poker Variations
Miscellaneous variations also follow a ranking of hands but are
not considered as any of the variations above. Among the games
in this type are Buddha’s Folly and Bean Marriage.
Non-Poker Variations
No system of ranking is used by these games to decide the winner.
Seven-Twenty Seven, Numbers and Thirteen-Thirty Three are games
played in this variation.
In home poker, each variation has been revised to make the games
fun and exciting. In Stud, for example, each player has certain
number of cards facing-up and facing-down. The face-down cards
can be seen the player only while face-up cards are seen by all
the players. A typical game of stud uses five or seven cards. In
Draw Games, all cards are faced down with each player allowed to
replace their hand with a new card. Cards are dealt to each player
followed by a betting round.
