Weighing
the Odds in Hold'em Poker by King Yao
Your poker game skill will never get beyond a certain point unless
you start to understand odds and percentages of cards and then
take advantage of them. It is through this technique that the poker
player can influence and control tables with smart betting and
as the old classic song goes, know when to hold them and know when
to fold.
While most books that cover the odds and percentages seem more
like a math book for some statistics class, Weighing the Odds in
Hold'em Poker does an excellent job in making this more fundamental
and intuitive.
So many books have been written on this topic and most just turn
into chart after chart of information which only Rainman himself
can get any use from. I guess if you were fast at indexing pages
and playing online that type of book would be fine, but this one
goes well beyond that and teaches instead of preaches.
Through a clear and precise writing style King Yao goes through
not only the exact odds themselves it also shows why to think certain
players get trapped in certain situations. When you understand
those problems you can then work through them.
However this is not a book for beginners. This book should be read
and studied by intermediate players who are looking to advance their
skill level to get past the block where skill and luck stops and
knowledge starts. Only through understanding the odds can one start
to play the odds. The flip side being when you start to recognize
those strengths and weaknesses in other players at your table you
can regulate your betting accordingly.
King Yao has a style of writing that makes this not a chore to read
through and is a much easier read than the usual statistic and odds
book. While another book may take weeks to digest, Weighing the Odds
in Hold'em Poker can be read in a couple sittings to get the gist
and already have a positive influence on your poker game.
Through his book one can learn to easily memorize the odds and understand
them. Once that bridge is crossed your winnings will increase and
the odds of becoming the master of any table you sit down at.
That is unless of course someone else sitting at the same table
has also read Yao’s book and then you might actually have
a run for your money.
