A List of Bizarre Poker Words

Heaven knows how amateur poker players had to adjust with understanding poker lingo and recognizing the fact that killing the pot doesn’t literally mean smashing it to pieces or that the term “calling station” they keep hearing about is actually a reference to themselves. And then there are those confusing big, small and overblinds that they have to familiarize themselves with. Poker lingo seems almost as hard as conjugating verbs in French. Can anything be worse than this?

Yes, there can be something worse and that’s the daily addition of poker slang. Poker language, unfortunately for you, is not a dead language like Latin. It grows and grows and grows and all you have to do is keep up with it. Hence, we’ve come up with a list of the most bizarre words that you may come across with when playing poker.
American Airlines – I know, I thought of the same thing too. What the heck does an airline has to do with poker? But apparently, it does as it refers to a poker player holding a hand with two places in the hole. It is also sometimes known as either rockets or pocket rockets.

Big Chick – this refers to one ace and one queen.
Computer Hand – This refers to a poker hand that on average is supposed to be the median of all other hands. I’m still wondering what computer has to do with it.

Dolly Parton – Yes, poker has apparently even reached showbiz. Or showbiz has reached poker. This refers to a Hold’Em poker hand of 9-5, which it seems also to be a title of one of her movies. Good. I thought it had something to do with body parts.

Ghost Dog – This paranormal term refers to hole card of 4 7, no matter if it’s suited or not.

Jackson Five – Try figuring it out first. No? Well, it refers to a starting hand at poker with a Jack and a five. Not exactly a brain twister, eh?

Leather Butt – Try figuring this out again. Well, why wouldn’t be one called as such if he hasn’t been playing for a long time or at least plays a very extensive selection of poker games?

Newlyweds – Surprisingly, it has nothing to do with Mr. and Mrs. Jessica Simpson. It actually refers to a Texas Hold’Em starting hand of a king and queen. Mm, maybe it does have something to do with it. What do you think?
